UTSAV is a classical tale of love and romance set against a background teeming with passion, intrigue and political revolution, which takes place during the hectic days of a Spring Festival.

It is the story of a passionate love affair between Vasantsena (REKHA), a beautiful and renowned courtesan of Ujjain and Charudatt (SHEKHAR SUMAN), a handsome and impoverished Brahmin youth, who has dissipated his family wealth through his career of a leisurely and cultured life. Their relationship reults in the polarization of two contemporary life styles—that of the ornate an richly embroidered life of a successful courtesan with that of a simple and aesthetic life of a Brahmin.

The brother-in-law of the King, Samsthanak (SHASHI KAPOOR) is in love with Vasantsena. He is a disreputable character—mean and unscrupulous—and spends a lot of time in hot pursuit of her. But Vasantsena remains aloof and will have nothing to do with him.

Intrigue abounds and is prolifc on all levels, resulting in much confusion and calamities, which have hilarious results. Aryak (KUNAL KAPOOR), a political revolutionary, plans to depose the King. Vatsyayan (AMJAD KHAN), compiles his masterpiece on sexology—the “KAMA SUTRA” and alternates between instructing the courtesans on the spiritual aspects of his science and spying on their activities with their clients, ever hopeful for new inspiration and information.

The plots thicken and come to a climax, when Charudatt is accused of murder and sentenced to die. Rescue comes in the nick of time and he is saved, But there remains the choice between the two women in his life—his wife (ANOORADHA) and Vasantsena, who both love him.

This happy tale has a poignant ending.
